Follow the Grain

John O Groat's Mill Trust

2025

For John O’Groats Mill, Bright developed an interpretive scheme that celebrates the building’s remarkable industrial heritage. Through clear wayfinding, infographics, models, immersive storytelling and a cohesive visual identity, the project enhances the visitor experience while allowing the mill’s original architecture, machinery and historic character to remain centre stage.

Much of John O’Groats Mill’s original machinery, tools and internal workings remain intact, making it one of the most complete surviving water-powered mills of its kind in Scotland.

Bright’s visitor experience was built around two interpretive routes “Follow the Power” and “Follow the Grain” helping visitors understand both the mechanics of the mill and the journey of grain through the building.

The current mill was built in 1901 on the site of previous mills going back centuries. The Houston family milled in this location from 1750 until 2001, and the mill was one of the last water-powered mills to be built in Scotland.
