Crafting a Distinct Caithness Identity

John O’Groats Mill Trust

2025

For John O’Groats Mill, Bright developed a distinctive visual identity that draws inspiration from the building’s rich industrial heritage and unique setting. Through a carefully crafted brand, clear wayfinding and a cohesive design language, the project establishes a strong and recognisable presence while allowing the mill’s original architecture, machinery and historic character to remain centre stage.

The brand identity takes strong inspiration from the Mill itself. Emphasis has been placed on the building recognising the long standing history as an operating mill and the new history that will be created as a visitor centre.

The colour palette takes inspiration from the mill and surrounding landscape. Red oxide, a colour associated with the building for many decades was selected as the primary colour. Additionally a warm stone colour reflects the buildings exterior and millstones within, and secondary colours selected – inspired by the unique landscape the mill is located in.

The project’s visual identity took inspiration directly from the site itself, with the brand mark and textured typography influenced by the mill’s weathered surfaces and the distinctive red paint found on its historic doors and architectural details.
