A Pilgrimage to the Spiritual Home of Scotch

Lindores Abbey Distillery

2017

At Lindores Abbey Distillery, Bright transformed the visitor experience into an immersive journey through the origins of Scotch whisky, combining exhibition design, interpretive storytelling and crafted interiors. Through atmospheric displays, bespoke furniture and carefully detailed spaces, the project connects medieval monastic heritage with contemporary whisky-making culture.

Whisky production was first recorded at Lindores Abbey in 1494, when Friar John Cor paid duty on eight "bolls" of malt to make alcohol, for King James IV. The old Scottish measure amounts to 350 litres.

Lindores Abbey’s monastic heritage is brought vividly to life through crafted interventions including woodcut graphics, reimagined ecclesiastical texts and a monumental refectory table handmade from local oak and displaying a collection of iconic artefacts.

In the Apothecary, Bright have created an atmospheric space with carefully lit exhibits which allude to the monks’ attempts at alchemy and relates the ingredients used in their legendary aqua vitae.
